Resources

Here is a video from Rooted in Rights that describes the rights of people with disabilities at the polls. As this video states, you have a right to assistance and accommodations while voting. If you feel that your rights have not been respected at your polling place, please contact ADAP for assistance.

TeIf you’re at least 18 years of age and meet the other eligibility requirements for the State of Alabama, please take some time to review our Alabama Voter’s Guide from The Secretary of State's Office. It provides you with registration requirements, when to register, where and how to register, dates and much more. Please contact us if you would like access to Braille copy of the Alabama Voter Guide.xt

Alabama voters can now register to vote online. Voters can submit their registration form online at www.alabamavotes.gov, but the registration will require a valid Alabama drivers license or state-issued photo ID. Photo ID isn't required to register in person or when mailing in a paper registration form, but is required when voting at the polls.

Voting Rights for People under Guardianships

Check out this voter guide for people with disabilities who are under a guardianship.  The most important lessons from the guide are:

  • People have the right to vote even if under guardianship.
  • Only a judge can make the decision that someone is not competent to vote.  Service providers, including nursing homes, hospitals, and group homes, cannot bar people from voting.
  • People with disabilities have the right to get help with voting and to decide who will help them vote. Help can be provided by a friend, family member, caregiver, or service provider.

The guide was written by the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law and the National Disability Rights Network.
